Sunoco planning new rail spur in Westville

Sunoco is planning to construct an additional rail spur in Westville that will allow trains carrying materials a more direct route to the oil company’s refinery in West Deptford. While details of the plan are still unavailable, borough administrator William Bittner Jr. said the current spur, which directs rail cars to the refinery from the south, through Woodbury, causes headaches for drivers and residents as trains block multiple intersections.

“Right now, you have a train with 80 cars coming in, and it blocks Park Avenue, and then Olive Street while they throw the switch,” said Bittner. “And then when it starts up again, and blocks Olive Street and Route 45, and it’s holding up traffic for 30 to 45 minutes.” With the new spur, rail cars would still block routes 45 and 130, “but for not as long,” added the administrator.
