Dear Ms. Feldman:
As President of the Southern New Jersey Development Council (SNJDC) , I would like to take this opportunity to express the organization's overwhelming support for the proposal to develop a motor-sports park in Cumberland County. It is our hope that your review of the Delaware River & Bay Authority's land transfer application will lead to the successful transfer of property to the City of Millville.
The SNJDC has served the southern region of this state for over 50 years and has consistently supported economic development projects that have helped make South Jersey an exciting place to live, work and play. As a leader in the responsible growth of South Jersey, we strongly urge your favorable consideration of the proposed motor-sports park at the Millville Airport.
Cumberland County has seen some of the State's worst levels of unemployment in recent years. Since January 2004, the State of New Jersey's unemployment level has hovered around 5.0% while Cumberland County has averaged 7.7% unemployed. Conservative estimates predict the creation of 1,500 new jobs in the region, the construction of new hotels to support the expected influx of competitors and spectators, and the advancement of educational opportunities at local universities and colleges in the area of performance engineering. I have no doubt that the creation of a motor-sports park in Cumberland County would serve as an “engine” for economic growth while decreasing the region's unemployment rate.
The motor-sports park would also help “drive” the revitalization of downtown Millville. The new Millville Arts District, one of the most innovative downtown redevelopment projects in the State, would benefit tremendously from the vast number of new visitors. Also, partnered with the city's recent Main Street New Jersey designation, the raceway will help expedite the revitalization efforts of local businesses. The positive effects of a motor-sports park at Millville Airport are countless.
Many state, county and local government officials are in support of this project, and for good reason. The SNJDC greatly appreciates your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
Marlene Z. Asselta
President, SNJDC

To the Editor,
As President and on behalf of the Southern New Jersey Development Council (SNJDC) , I wish to fervently support the proposed Motorsports Park Complex at Cumberland County Millville Airport. The SNJDC has been promoting responsible economic growth in South Jersey for over 50 years. After much review, the SNJDC has concluded that this project is something that the community needs and wants and it will have a significant impact on economic development in Cumberland County and the region.
The creation of the Motorsports Park will stimulate economic growth while decreasing the region's unemployment rate. This complex will provide approximately 1500 permanent jobs (in addition to 1,000 construction jobs) in a community and region that desperately needs employment, and will help to diversify the southern New Jersey economy. In addition, a substantial tourist attraction will be created drawing people to the region and stimulating the local economy. New hotels will be constructed to meet the requirements of visiting car enthusiasts, competitors and spectators. Plans for innovative educational opportunities in the field of engineering will be created at local colleges and universities in the surrounding area.
The Motorsports Park will expedite the efforts of local businesses in redevelopment projects like the new Millville Arts District. This is one of the most innovative downtown redevelopment projects in the state and it would benefit greatly from the large numbers of new visitors to the Park. The motorsports project will bring in millions of dollars to revitalize the downtown and improve the quality of the neighborhoods and the city.
The Motorsports Park has received unanimous bipartisan support from elected officials in the region and the SNJDC joins with them in calling for the withdrawal of the pointless lawsuit brought by a few environmental groups. Further, this litigation might prove to be a serious setback to the project's construction schedule – it certainly has the potential of discouraging the current investors and perhaps future investors looking at Cumberland County for other projects.
For Cumberland County and the entire Southern New Jersey region the construction of the Motorsports Park needs to move forward towards its proposed opening in the spring of 2006.
Sincerely,
Marlene Z. Asselta
President, SNJDC
