The Glassboro-Camden Line (GCL) is a proposed 18-mile light rail system in southern New Jersey, designed to connect Glassboro to Camden and improve regional transit accessibility. Scheduled for completion in the late 2020s, the GCL aims to reduce traffic congestion and foster economic development along its route, serving 12 stations.

The Southern New Jersey Development Council (SNJDC) has been a vocal advocate for the Glassboro-Camden Line, emphasizing its potential to boost regional economic development and improve transportation infrastructure. The council works to build support among stakeholders, highlighting the project's benefits for local businesses, commuters, and communities along the proposed route.

A Transportation Lifeline

The GCL is a proposed 18-mile passenger rail line restoring passenger rail service along the existing rail corridor between Glassboro and Camden in South Jersey.

The GCL corridor traverses Gloucester and Camden counties including the communities of Glassboro, Pitman, Sewell, Mantua Township, Deptford Township, Wenonah, Woodbury Heights, Woodbury, Westville, Brooklawn, Gloucester City, and Camden.

Quiet Zones

Localities that meet certain safety requirements can apply for a “Quiet Zone” segment of a rail line that has multiple crossings on a public highway. Upon meeting technical requirements, locomotive horns will not be routinely sounded within a quiet zone.

The GCL Project Team is committed to the design and future investment of the installation and maintenance of all Quiet Zone infrastructure along the GCL alignment.

Train Types

The Glassboro–Camden Line (GCL) will utilize diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains, which are self-propelled vehicles powered by onboard diesel engines.

DMUs are fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to traditional diesel locomotives, and their ability to operate on existing rail infrastructure helps reduce construction costs.

Smart Growth

Smart growth is defined as “an overall approach of development and conservation strategies that can help protect our health and natural environment and make our communities more attractive, economically stronger, socially diverse, and resilient to climate change.”

There are ten basic principles to guide strategies for smart growth, and fortunately for area residents, the GCL overwhelmingly checks the boxes.

The Southern New Jersey Development Council has provided ongoing support and advocacy through the formation of the South Jersey Coalition in Support of the Glassboro-Camden Line.  Interested organizations are encouraged to call or email snjdc@snjdc.org to join over 120 organizations advocating for its successful completion and to ensuring it delivers the transformative impact our region deserves.
