The SNJDC welcomed Kris Kolluri, President & CEO of NJ TRANSIT and Executive Director of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority for a recent Public Policy Speaker Series at the Courtyard by Marriott in Glassboro. The event convened regional business leaders, transportation stakeholders, and public officials to discuss the infrastructure investments, policy priorities, and long-term vision shaping the future of transportation in South Jersey.

Dr. Ali Houshmand, President of Rowan University welcomed attendees, highlighting the institution’s role as a hub for regional innovation and growth. Senator John Burzichelli provided introductory remarks, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, optimism, and sustained investment in South Jersey’s economic future, while underscoring Kolluri’s leadership and track record in delivering complex infrastructure projects.

In his keynote address Kolluri, recently appointed by Governor Mikie Sherrill to oversee both NJ TRANSIT and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, outlined a comprehensive strategy to modernize and strengthen New Jersey’s transportation network. He detailed ongoing efforts at NJ TRANSIT to improve reliability through the replacement of aging railcars and buses, noting that the agency plans to introduce hundreds of new railcars and more than 1,400 new buses by 2031. He emphasized that these investments are critical to delivering safe, efficient, and accessible mobility for residents across the state.

Kolluri also highlighted major infrastructure initiatives impacting South Jersey, including progress on the Glassboro-Camden Light Rail Line (GCL). He noted that, after decades of discussion, the project is advancing through key milestones such as coordination with Conrail and movement on the Mantua Creek bridge construction contract. Kolluri stressed the importance of continuing forward momentum while addressing community concerns and ensuring the project connects residents to employment, education, and healthcare opportunities.

Additional remarks focused on the revitalization of the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden, where 26 bus routes currently operate daily. Kolluri underscored the need to modernize the facility to better serve riders and support regional connectivity, noting that state funding has been allocated to advance the project in partnership with local stakeholders.

A key theme of the discussion was the integration of transportation modes and land use. Kolluri described a forward-looking approach that aligns mass transit, highways, and economic development through the strategic use of publicly owned land. By leveraging underutilized assets, NJ TRANSIT and the Turnpike Authority aim to generate long-term revenue, support transit-oriented development, and expand access to jobs and housing without overburdening taxpayers.
