SNJDC's 43rd Annual Sound Off For South Jersey Legislative Conference

On Friday, September 12th, the SNJDC welcomed business, community, and government leaders from across the region to The Westin Mount Laurel for the 43rd Annual Sound Off for South Jersey Legislative Conference. SNJDC President Marlene Asselta opened the program alongside Mount Laurel Mayor Nikitas Moustakas, followed by recognition of elected officials and business leaders in attendance.

Republican Gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli offered remarks on his vision for New Jersey's economic future and a discussion on current state policies. Jack touched on the States energy policy, corporate business tax policies, and called for a "more robust relationship between the Department of Labor and the Department of Education".

The event’s popular debate segment, moderated by Virtua Health’s Director of Public Affairs Joe Bisicchia, provided candid political insight from Democratic strategist Michael Muller of TargetSmart and Republican strategist Carlos Cruz of Jamestown Associates. The discussion was framed around the context of a pivotal gubernatorial election, initiating topics such political competition, presidential influence on state elections, business environment, energy policy, property taxes, and infrastructure, particularly in South Jersey.

Muller acknowledged the "skyrocketing cost of energy" and the need for an "all the above policy" to address the energy crisis, stating, "We have had some very tough swing districts who are leading the fight for permitting reform, and cutting red tape." Cruz emphasized that voters seek "humanity" and relatability in candidates, and stressed the need for candidates to "take the temperature down and move us forward.

Delivering the keynote address, Governor Phil Murphy highlighted key state initiatives and reaffirmed his commitment to South Jersey’s economic and community development. The Governor highlighted "seven consecutive years of all-time high investment in the state's infrastructure", and described how his administration focused on "deploying both energy price relief at record levels and new sources of energy and power".

He positioned New Jersey as an "innovation economy" and emphasized New Jersey's "proud reputation as the home to the best public education system in America," citing a 135% increase in funding for South Jersey public schools. Murphy concluded by describing his approach as "planting the seeds" for long-term growth. He highlighted New Jersey's status as the "fastest growing economy in the Northeast," having received credit rating upgrades, and being named a "top three most livable state in America".

SNJDC Chairman Glenn Davila concluded the program, acknowledging the organization’s board members, sponsors, and attendees for their contributions to another successful conference.
