SNJDC's Meet the Legislators of Districts 1 & 2

On Friday, the Southern New Jersey Development Council welcomed legislators from New Jersey’s 1st and 2nd Legislative Districts for a Public Policy Speaker Series at Atlantic Cape Community College's Mays Landing campus. The event offered attendees the chance to hear directly from their elected representatives on key issues impacting South Jersey’s business and economic climate, and their priorities in the new Sherrill administration.

The event opened with networking and welcoming remarks from Atlantic Cape President Dr. Barbara Gaba, who highlighted the college’s critical role in workforce development, economic mobility, and innovation, particularly through initiatives in healthcare, aviation, digital equity, and artificial intelligence training.

Moderated by SNJDC Trustee and Government Affairs Committee Co-Chair Gina Sullivan of ELEC 825, the legislators from Districts 1 and 2 outlined their priorities as they relate to business growth, infrastructure, and regional equity. Assemblyman Don Guardian emphasized protecting Atlantic City’s gaming and tourism economy, opposing North Jersey casino expansion, reforming the PILOT program, and advocating for a gradual return of local control from the state. Assemblywoman Maureen Rowan, newly sworn in to represent District 2, stressed the need to diversify Atlantic County’s economy through “eds and meds,” urban redevelopment, small business incentives, and improved utilization of regional assets like Atlantic City International Airport.

Representing District 1, Assemblymen Antwan McClellan and Erik Simonsen focused on workforce pipelines, manufacturing, tourism, education funding, and support for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Both highlighted the importance of state investment in South Jersey communities and partnerships with community colleges to create accessible career pathways. Senator Mike Testa closed the discussion by addressing affordability, energy reliability, manufacturing investment, and transportation challenges, underscoring the need for policies that reflect South Jersey’s distinct economic and geographic realities.

The event concluded with a lively audience Q&A, allowing the legislators an opportunity to engage with attendees directly on their thoughts regarding South Jersey’s economic future.
